Art: Nesebar is where we are and we can start with the quickest. As mentioned in the resort section, this town is another name for History, Art and Architecture. Not only was it the thriving port in the region during Greek and Roman times, but was later blessed by the Byzantines with 19th century architecture and distinct collection of churches. Ceramics and frescoes are the highlights of this time. As you approach the peninsula you can find an ancient wooden windmill teaching us the environmental green awareness of these people in those days. Greek influence from 4th Century B.C with the fortification and the masonry as witness can be judged here. The visit to the archaeological museum here shows the interesting collections of plaques, tombstones coins from the past. Three images of Hectate, Grecian pottery and gold jewellery, sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century religious relics like the Bishops throne, The icon of Christ and The Pharisees are the other things that grab your attention. Architecture: 1. Nesebars Churches Church of Christ Pantokrator mainly noted for its exterior decoration with all the Byzantine architecture glory including blind niches, turquoise ceramics and red brick motifs. Our visitors rate the Varna Cathedral as the king of all architectures in the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, right from its royalty to its golden decorations. Also known as the Cathedral of assumption with an established period of the 19th Century, the throne and gold carvings captivate your minds with lingering thoughts. Outside you can get the local stalls for handicrafts primarily knitting and you can order to sell your product made and then take it home. The 11th Century Church of St John the Baptist has only one frescoe surviving in its art gallery. Some better preserved frescoes can be found at the church of the Saviour. An old art from of graffiti mainly of the sailing vessels of this port town can be found here. Other churches worth a visit are the churches to Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Church of Sveta Paraskeva church of Sveta Bogoroditsa and the old Metropolitan church, while the pirates of then days fancied a loot from the Basalica by the sea shore the. The Church of Sveti Todor has been turned into a gallery for you art lovers. Though in ruins don’t miss the Church of John Aliturgetos as its exterior decoration is done by limestone, red bricks, crosses, mussel shells and ceramic shells. 2. Queen Maries Palace (Dvoretsa) One of the grand daughters of Queen Victoria was Kent born Queen Marie, that makes Queen Marie British. Her gentle nature brought her to build this superb oriental style palace. This is a standalone piece of architecture that defies the presence of the communist era. Balchiks biggest crowd puller is this monument that has a minaret rising from the top showing its tolerance of the Islamic faith along with her Christian subjects. Some view this as a country house rather than a palace but definitely Queen Marie has her plan with views that looks straight into the sea and cliffs further along the strip of coast. At the bottom of the palace is an artificial beach and bars. The palace is adorned by its natural jewel the botanical garden mentioned below. History still continues to the east of the palace with a water mill, a Rose garden and a Roman bath and a chapel where the Queen had willed her heart to be buried in a jewelled casket. The gardens are well tended and neat in nature in contrast with the rugged town. Flowers of all shapes, sizes and colours lighten the place up to a picturesque finish. Lose yourself in this wide expanse of land that has a gushing water fall, streams of clean water and romantic cottage homes in the trees. Leaf covered pathways and steps chipped out of the hilly rocks are another feature to notice. Thank Queen Marie for providing those benches as a means of taking a break of getting some privacy from those long walks and climbing. The scenery of all of this is worth the visit.
